THE MANIFESTO

THE INTERNET
IS EASY TO FILL.
THAT’S THE PROBLEM.

001

There was a time when putting something on the internet required at least the mild inconvenience of making it. Now the feed can be filled faster than any person can decide whether what is filling it deserves to exist.

SLOP IS NOT JUST BAD TASTE.

Bad art can be wonderful. Dumb jokes can be perfect. Weirdness is one of the reasons the internet was worth loving in the first place. Slop is something else: low-effort, repetitive, synthetic, recycled, manipulative, or algorithmically optimized media whose primary achievement is continuing to exist in front of you.

Sometimes AI makes it. Sometimes a content farm does. Sometimes a corporation, influencer, political operator, publisher, dropshipper, or bored person discovers that the cheapest thing to manufacture is attention bait. The technology changes. The trough remains.

WE ARE NOT ANTI-AI.

A tool can help somebody make something thoughtful. A human being can make spectacular garbage with nothing more advanced than a keyboard and misplaced confidence. The line that interests us is not human versus machine. It is intention versus indifference, evidence versus appearance, communication versus throughput.

THE FEED DOES NOT CARE WHY YOU STOPPED.

Wonder, disgust, fear, lust, outrage, confusion, recognition: from the perspective of a metric, these emotions can begin to look suspiciously similar. You stayed. You clicked. You shared. The system learned something about how to keep you there.

Slopulous is interested in what happens to culture when this becomes the environment rather than the exception.

SO WE ASK FOUR QUESTIONS.

  1. Who made this?
  2. Why am I seeing it?
  3. What does it want from me?
  4. What remains after the hook?
The goal is not to distrust everything. The goal is to stop giving everything the benefit of our attention.

DON’T FALL FOR THE SLOP.

Not because the internet used to be pure. It wasn’t. Not because every synthetic image is a crisis. It isn’t. And not because we can escape technology by buying a flip phone and developing an expensive relationship with vinyl.

Pay attention because attention is one of the few things the feed cannot manufacture for you.

You still have to choose where it goes.
